The Fellowship has a 32-foot indoor labyrinth that is permanently inlaid in the sanctuary floor. This labyrinth is a Petite Chartres Labyrinth in the medieval style. Our indoor labyrinth is one of only two permanent indoor labyrinths in New York State!

What is a labyrinth? A labyrinth is not a maze. There are no wrong turns or dead ends. If you begin at the “mouth” or opening, and follow the path you will eventually reach the center. After remaining in the center for a while, you retrace your steps back to the opening. “Endings are also beginnings.”

What do I “do” on a labyrinth? Our labyrinth walks are facilitated by Linda Mikell who is certified by Veriditas, The Voice of the Labyrinth Movement, founded in 1966. Veriditas is a non-profit organization dedicated to introducing people to the healing, meditative powers of the labyrinth. Linda describes the ways to meditate on the way in, in the center and on the way out. Linda provides the atmosphere for quiet meditation and holds the sacred space at the entrance to the labyrinth. You walk to recorded music especially made for labyrinth walking. The evening labyrinth walk is usually lit with candles around its perimeter. After walking there is a sharing and a closing circle.

When are the walks? Every Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (note time change) a labyrinth walk is held in the sanctuary on the Petite Chartres Labyrinth.  This spiritual, but non-sectarian practice is meditative, stress reducing and energizing. Choose from many intentions for your walk:  gratitude, remembrance, problem solving, relaxation, soul searching.  The process is fully explained and everyone is welcome. Evening walks are held once a month on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:00 p.m.  If you come early, you can watch Tai Chi on the candle-lit labyrinth.  We hope to see you on the path. There is also a labyrinth located outside in our back garden.  This labyrinth is available at all times during daylight hours.

Labyrinth walks are open to all and are free.  There is a free-will donation basket in the lobby.

Walking The Labyrinth

People walk labyrinths for many reasons and with many different intentions. Here are a few:

  • to find peace
  • to express gratitude
  • to solve a problem
  • to de-stress
  • to work on a problematic relationship
  • to unblock creative energies
  • to find their purpose or heart song

Labyrinths are not new but have been found on coins and sites that date back almost 4,000 years. Its use transcends boundaries of culture, race, or religion. Jean Houston writes about the labyrinth:

“It allows us a map that is not a map, a journey that transcends journey, and gives a kind of clarity to our lives that we cannot find through ordinary means.”
