The Racial Concerns Committee provides the congregation with information and opportunities that allow us to live out the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism as we identify, unmask, and eradicate institutional and personal expressions of racism.

Our vision is that members of UUFSB appreciate and encourage a view that celebrates African American history including its cultural richness as well as the diversity within the larger American population.  We understand that the persistence of racism in institutions and in personal practice requires that we become agents in the struggle to end discrimination toward people of color.

The Racial Concerns Committee celebrates the history and culture of African Americans, even as we continue to struggle against institutional racism and personal racist practices.

In an effort to foster individual spiritual growth, we encourage members of the congregation to participate in programs designed to do the following:

• Increase understanding of how institutional racism impacts communities and the individual, and prepare individuals to act as allies in the struggle against racist practices.
• Join with members of the congregation in the crafting of services celebrating Black History Month and the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Participate in the National Council of Teachers of English read-in of African American writers.
• Provide opportunities to view, read and discuss media directly related to the experience of African American people.
• Participate in field trips to important sites of African American history and culture.
• Honor our continued and mutually nourishing relationship expressed in events and programs with Bethel A.M.E., our sister church.
• Respond to events related to the mission and vision of the Racial Concerns Committee unfolding at the local or national level.
• Welcome volunteers for special events and ongoing activities.
• Unite with other UU congregations in anti-racism efforts within the Metro District and beyond.
